Five authorised sequels were written in the 1970s by a prolific writing team, Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac. He wrote a couple of science-fiction novels and dreamed up more heroes, but Lupin trumped them all.Įven after Leblanc’s death in 1941, Lupin adventures kept on coming. Like Conan Doyle, Leblanc came to resent his hero for distracting the public from his other works.
After a threat of legal action, Leblanc changed the character’s name to Herlock Sholmes. But Arthur Conan Doyle did not take kindly to some upstart Frenchman stealing his character, let alone outsmarting him. Naturally he came into competition with a mastermind from across the Channel, Sherlock Holmes. Time and time again when all seemed lost, he would make a miraculous escape. He outwitted powerful people far more villainous than he was, and though he was a martial arts expert who got into many fights, he never killed anyone. Although he was on the wrong side of the law, Lupin had his own moral code.
